The Pied Pipers – Dreams From The Sunny Side Of The Street

The Pied Pipers were a popular singing group in the late 1930's and 1940's.

In 1938 two vocal groups (The Three Rhythm Kings & The 4 Esquires) and Jo Stafford (from The Stafford Sisters) merged into one "supergroup", vocal octet The Pied Pipers. By late 1939 they were down to a quartet and had several personnel changes through the years.

The group was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2001.

The Ink Spots - Swing High Swing Low

 

The Ink Spots were an American vocal jazz group who gained international fame in the 1930s and 1940s. Their unique musical style presaged the rhythm and blues and rock and roll musical genres, and the sub-genre doo-wop. The Ink Spots were widely accepted in both the white and black communities, largely due to the ballad style introduced to the group by lead singer Bill Kenny.

In 1989, the Ink Spots (Bill Kenny, Charlie Fuqua, Deek Watson, Jerry Daniels and Orville Jones) were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in 1999 they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame.

Berlin Comedian Harmonists - Ein Lied geht um die Welt (A song goes around the world )

 

Internationally successful German vocal group, founded in December 1927, split up in March 1935.

Originally created in imitation of the American The Revelers and called "The Melody Makers," the "Comedian Harmonists," a vocal quintet accompanied by a pianist, developed their own close harmony style. The five singers blended their voices so closely together that there was usually no more than an interval of a twelfth between top and bottom voices; individual singers would emerge from this close vocal texture for solos, and tenor buffo Frommermann, in particular, would contribute comical voice imitations of instruments. The ensemble's repertoire ranged from German Schlager ("Veronika, Der Lenz Ist Da," 1930) and German versions of jazz-tinged American pop songs ("Wochenend Und Sonnenschein" = "Happy Days Are Here Again," 1930) and a vocalized version of Duke Ellington's "Creole Love Call" (1933) to German folk songs ("In Einem Kühlen Grunde," 1932). The Comedian Harmonists recorded first for Odeon (1928-1929), from October 1929 to March 1935 for Electrola.

Pure Nostalgia...The Greatest Artists...1928-1941...original mono recodings

 

This wonderful compilation, with 79 minutes of music, is a great introduction to long gone names whose music still sparkles after many decades.

What we have here is some really fun and entertaining music, even from the times when ballads were supposed to be sad (Al Jolson chest-beating became unintentionally funny). The album opens with the (then) young and awful-voiced Marlene Dietrich singing her signature song "Falling In Love Again", which sounds much, much different than her later versions (later she honed it to a perfection, here she was just a young German woman who was falling in and out of pitch!), and what follows is really glowing with humour. Listeners will recognise Cab Calloway's "Minnie The Moocher" from the "Blues Brothers" movie. Also of note is the great Paul Robeson and Fred Astaire, the lovely, happy "Louise" by Maurice Chevalier, the breathtaking vocal acrobatics of The Mills Brothers and Ink Spots and the wonderful "Leaning On A Lamp Post" by George Formby.

60's style sister duo The Debutantes release second single My Precious Love..infectious and dance-able

Following on from the successful cover of ‘If Paradise (Was Half as Nice)’ in 2019 which was warmly embraced by BBC Radio Wales and The Welsh Echo, The Debutantes make a triumphant return with the second single from the album ‘Symphonic Pop’ which is due later this year. My Precious Love sticks to the same winning formula the sisters became known for last year and demonstrates an original composition for the first time.



 The song opens with a barrage of carefully orchestrated stabs, in a nod to The Supremes or Ronnets and the influential wall of sound approach. This classic technique is resurrected into technicolour colour with the advance of technology and crafted into something new but yet familiar. The winning formula brings back all the nostalgia of a time lost but not forgotten alongside demonstrating The Debutantes have far more to offer in their repertoire than covers. The chorus hook is as well-crafted and infectious as any single but plays on the retro influences of the due bringing something fresh to the table.

Marty's review: The Debutantes' second single embraces the 60's sound with its Phil Spector/girl groups style vocals and a go-go/pop beat that is infectious and extremely dance-able. Their harmonies blend together perfectly and they capture the essence and vitality that the 60's were all about. Love the sound, the outfits and those beehive hairdo's!!

Compiled by New York-based singer Athan Maroulis, the Sisters Anthology features 32 different US and UK acts, represented by 38 carefully-chosen recordings ranging from the 1924 rendition of "Red Hot Mama" by the Brox Sisters to the obscure Jazz vocal group the Clark Sisters and their 1959 performance of "Take the 'A' Train". Famous featured artists include the Andrews, Fontane, Boswell and McGuire Sisters, while the Gumm, Stafford and Clooney Sisters feature early appearances by Judy Garland, Jo Stafford and Rosemary Clooney respectively. The selection ranges from hit records to songs recorded for films or radio shows. Total of 38 tracks.

The Andrews Sisters....22 classic tracks from the Golden Era of Swing Music

The Andrews Sisters were an American close harmony singing group of the swing and boogie woogie eras. The group consisted of three sisters: contralto LaVerne Sophia (July 6, 1911 – May 8, 1967), soprano Maxine Angelyn "Maxene" (January 3, 1916 – October 21, 1995), and mezzo-soprano Patricia Marie "Patty" (February 16, 1918 – January 30, 2013). Throughout their long career, the sisters sold well over 75 million records (the last official count released by MCA Records in the mid-1970s). Their 1941 hit "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" can be considered an early example of rhythm and blues or jump blues.

The Andrews Sisters' harmonies and songs are still influential today, and have been covered by entertainers such as Bette Midler, Christina Aguilera, and others. The group was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1998. Writing for Bloomberg, Mark Schoifet said the sisters became the most popular female vocal group of the first half of the 20th century. They are still acclaimed widely today for their famous close harmonies.

This 22 track compilation contains classics like Shoo Shoo Baby, Rum and Coca Cola, Beat Me Daddy Eight to the Bar, Rhumboogie and Pennsylvania Polka.
